Preview: UFC Fight Night 227 Prelims

Chairez vs. da Silva

Flyweights

Edgar Chairez (10-5, 0-1 UFC) vs. Daniel da Silva (11-5, 0-4 UFC)

ODDS: Chairez (-250), da Silva (+200)

Da Silva appears to be in unprecedented territory, attempting for the fifth consecutive time to get his first UFC win. However, it is understandable that “Miojo” would get a long leash given the entertainment he brings to the Octagon. Nearly all of da Silva’s fights have seen him impress early thanks to some offensive dominance, which in turn makes it almost as impressive that he has been able to give every lead away, typically getting finished at some point late in the first or during the second round once the Brazilian is completely exhausted. Da Silva’s March loss to C.J. Vergara was one of the better fights of the year—quickly forgotten with the crush of the UFC’s schedule—so perhaps the fireworks continue against Mexico’s Chairez. A training partner of Brandon Moreno, Chairez is a capably well-rounded veteran who should find some success in the UFC after stepping in to face Tatsuro Taira on late notice in July. A look at Chairez’s record shows he can be stymied by top prospects with better athleticism (see: Taira), but he is just as capable of wedging open an opportunity to score a win. While Chairez might not have the highest upside, he should be able to separate the wheat from the chaff in the UFC’s flyweight division; and given some historically solid grappling, he should be able to survive the early going against da Silva and score yet another comeback victory against the Brazilian. The pick is Chairez via second-round submission.
