By The Numbers: Marloes Coenen

No one can deny Marloes Coenen’s considerable achievements as a mixed martial artist, though the deceptively elegant Dutch grappler seems destined to get swallowed by the shadows of better-known contemporaries like Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino, Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate.

“Rumina” retired in 2017 with a 23-8 record that featured 20 finishes. While Coenen never set foot inside the Ultimate Fighting Championship, she left her mark in various other high-profile promotions, from Strikeforce and Bellator MMA to Invicta Fighting Championships and Dream. She made what was her final appearance at Bellator 174, where she succumbed to fourth-round punches from Julia Budd and failed in her March 3, 2017 bid to capture the company’s women’s featherweight title.

As Coenen’s exploits drift further and further into the rearview mirror, a look at some of the numbers that accompanied throughout her career:

40: Years of age for Coenen, who was born on March 31, 1981 in Olst, Netherlands.

17: Coenen victories by submission, accounting for 74% of her career total (23). Her methods of choice: 10 armbars, six rear-naked chokes and one triangle choke. Coenen owns three other victories by knockout or technical knockout and three more by decision.

8: Consecutive wins for Coenen to start her career, six of them finishes. She defeated Yoko Takahashi (twice), Megumi Yabushita (twice), Miwako Ishihara, Becky Levi, Mika Harigai and Yuuki Kondo during her run as an undefeated fighter.

36: Rounds completed by Coenen in professional mixed martial arts. She went the distance on five different occasions and carried a 3-2 record in those bouts.

294: Days spent by Coenen as Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion. She captured the 135-pound title on Oct. 9, 2010 when she submitted Sarah Kaufman with an armbar in the third round of their Strikeforce “Diaz vs. Noons 2” pairing, retained it in a subsequent appearance opposite Liz Carmouche and then relinquished it in a fourth-round submission loss to Miesha Tate at Strikeforce/M-1 Global “Fedor vs. Henderson” on July 30, 2011.

17: Calendar years in which Coenen fought at least once. She went 4-0 in 2000, 1-0 in 2001, 2-0 in 2002, 1-1 in 2004, 1-0 in 2005, 1-0 in 2006, 3-1 in 2007, 3-0 in 2008, 1-1 in 2009, 1-1 in 2010, 1-1 in 2011, 2-0 in 2012, 0-1 in 2013, 1-0 in 2014, 1-0 in 2015, 0-1 in 2016 and 0-1 in 2017.

2: Sub-minute finishes on the Coenen resume. She submitted Harigai with a rear-naked choke in 33 seconds at a ReMix show on Dec. 5, 2000 and dispatched Takahashi with an armbar in 39 seconds at a Shooto event on March 11, 2006.

111: Seconds needed for Coenen to put away Asci Kubra under the K.O. Events banner in October 2008. It ranks as the fastest knockout or technical knockout on her ledger.

4: Countries in which Coenen competed as a mixed martial artist. She went 13-2 in Japan, 6-5 in the United States, 3-1 in the Netherlands and 1-0 in Switzerland.
