The Ultimate Fighting Championship kicked off its 2021 campaign with three events in seven days at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. UFC on ABC 1, UFC on ESPN 20 and UFC 257 bore witness to a generational performance from former featherweight champion Max Holloway, the continued climb of welterweight contender Michael Chiesa and the brilliant brush strokes of vengeful American Top Team ace Dustin Poirier.

As the UFC prepares to flip the calendar to February, a look at some of the numbers spawned by its three shows in the month gone by:

35: Bouts staged by the promotion across three Fight Island events. They resulted in 21 decisions (60%), 10 knockouts (28.6%) and four submissions (11.4%).

445: Significant strikes landed by Holloway—he set a single-fight UFC record—during his five-round unanimous decision over Calvin Kattar in the UFC on ABC 1 main event on Jan. 16. In fact, the Hawaiian set single-fight records in seven other categories: striking differential (312), significant strikes attempted (744), distance strikes landed (439), significant head strikes landed (274), significant body strikes landed (117), total strikes landed (447) and total strikes attempted (746).

120: Total strikes by which former World Extreme Cagefighting champion Carlos Condit outlanded Matt Brown in his unanimous decision over “The Immortal” in the UFC on ABC 1 co-headliner. Condit landed 157 strikes while absorbing only 37 in return, the differential a byproduct of the two takedowns he completed and the one reversal he executed in the 15-minute affair. It marked the first time “The Natural Born Killer” had secured multiple takedowns in a fight since he defeated Thiago Alves in the UFC Fight Night 67 main event on May 30, 2015.

2,030: Days between losses for Santiago Ponzinibbio. His knockout loss to Jingliang Li in the first round of their UFC on ABC 1 welterweight showcase was his first setback since June 27, 2015 and snapped the Argentinian’s seven-fight winning streak.

116: Combined victories between the four men Chiesa has beaten since he relocated to the welterweight division. “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 15 winner took a unanimous decision from Neil Magny in the UFC on ESPN 20 main event on Jan. 20 to improve to 4-0 in his new eight class. It followed victories over Condit, Rafael dos Anjos and Diego Sanchez, all three of whom have surpassed the 30-win plateau for their careers.

155: Seconds needed by Warlley Alves to put away Mounir Lazzez with a volley of body kicks and follow-up punches in the UFC on ESPN 20 co-headliner. It was the Brazilian’s first stoppage inside one round since he submitted Colby Covington with a guillotine choke on Dec. 12, 2015.

.833: Knockout percentage for Isaac Villanueva after he blew away Vinicius Moreira just 39 seconds into the second round of their UFC on ESPN 20 light heavyweight feature. It was Villanueva’s 15th career win by knockout—the former Fury Fighting Championship titleholder has 18 total victories—but the first to occur outside the first round.

19: Wins under the UFC banner for Poirier after he dismissed former two-division champion Conor McGregor in the UFC 257 headliner on Jan. 23, tying him with Rafael dos Anjos for seventh on the promotion’s all-time list. Only Donald Cerrone (23), Demian Maia (22), Jim Miller (21), Jon Jones (20), Georges St. Pierre (20) and Michael Bisping (20) have more.

3: Consecutive first-round finishes for Michael Chandler. The three-time Bellator MMA lightweight champion dazzled in his long-awaited Octagon debut, as he cut down Dan Hooker with punches 2:30 into their UFC 257 co-main event. Chandler exited the Bellator stage in August following back-to-back first-round knockouts of Sidney Outlaw and Benson Henderson.

148: Significant strikes landed by Joanne Calderwood during her unanimous decision over Jessica Eye in their UFC 257 women’s flyweight showcase. It was the highest total by any competitor in a three-round fight during the month of January. Calderwood delivered 53 such shots to the body, 52 to the head and 43 to the legs. Advertisement
