By the Numbers: UFC 213

Robert Whittaker can now make a claim to being the best middleweight in the world.

Fighting on one bad leg, “The Reaper” survived a strong start from opponent Yoel Romero to win a unanimous decision in the UFC 213 headliner in Las Vegas on Saturday night. With the victory, Whittaker captures interim 185-pound gold and earns a shot at undisputed middleweight king Michael Bisping at a later date. It’s a matchup that was originally booked for UFC 193 before Bisping withdrew due to injury. Now, the stakes will be much higher.

7: Consecutive victories for Whittaker, the longest active streak in the UFC’s middleweight division. Michael Bisping and Gegard Mousasi are tied for No. 2 with five straight triumphs.

26: Significant strikes by which Whittaker outlanded (74-to-48) Romero over the course of their five-round duel. Whittaker took control over the final three frames, outlanding “The Soldier of God” by a 61-to-30 count.

39: Total strikes by which Romero outlanded Whittaker in round two, when he landed two of three takedown attempts.

46: Significant head strikes landed by Whittaker. By comparison, Romero landed 20.

16: Significant leg strikes for Romero, one of which injured Whittaker’s knee early in the fight. Whittaker, meanwhile, landed five significant leg strikes.

4: Takedowns landed in 18 attempts by Romero. Three of Romero’s four successful takedowns occurred in rounds one and two.

78: Total strikes by which Fabricio Werdum outlanded Alistair Overeem in their co-main event heavyweight clash. Despite that advantage, which included a knockdown in round three, Overeem emerged with a majority decision triumph. Werdum also held a 49-to-21 edge in significant strikes landed.

9: Media scorecards, of the 16 tracked by MMADecisions.com, that awarded the bout to Overeem. Five saw the fight for Werdum, while two others scored it a draw.

0: Takedowns landed in 13 attempts by Curtis Blaydes against Daniel Omielanczuk in a featured heavyweight clash. Despite spending much of the fight pushing his Polish foe against the fence, Blaydes emerged with a unanimous decision triumph.

26: Total strikes by which Blaydes outlanded Omielanczuk. “Razor” outlanded his foe 31 to 27 in round one, 28 to 20 in round two and 35 to 21 in round three.

80: Significant strikes landed by Anthony Pettis in a decision triumph over Jim Miller, the most for “Showtime” during his UFC and WEC tenure. His previous best of 56 occurred in a loss to Eddie Alvarez in January 2016. By comparison, Miller landed 48 significant strikes.

4: Finishes in UFC competition for Rob Font, tying him for fourth most in bantamweight history. Only T.J. Dillashaw (six), Urijah Faber (six) and Renan Barao (five) have more. Font submitted Douglas Silva de Andrade with a guillotine choke 4:36 into round two on Saturday, adding the Brazilian to a list of victims that includes George Roop, Joey Gomez and Matt Schnell.

41: Career submission triumphs for Alexey Oleynik following his victory over Travis Browne in a preliminary heavyweight affair. “The Boa Constrictor” tapped his opponent with a rear-naked choke at the 3:44 mark of round two, giving him three submissions among his four UFC victories.

95: Total strikes by which Oleynik outlanded Browne. That includes an 82-to-13 advantage in the decisive second stanza.

1-5: Record for Browne since 2015. Prior to that, “Hapa” had established himself as a contender in the heavyweight division by going 8-2-1 in his first 11 appearances.

6: KO/TKO victories in UFC competition for Thiago Santos following his second-round stoppage of Gerald Meerschaert in a preliminary middleweight contest. That ties him with Nate Marquardt and Yoel Romero for fourth most in the history of the division. Only Anderson Silva (eight), Michael Bisping (seven) and Chris Leben (seven) have more.

45: Significant strikes by which Santos outlanded Meerschaert before the bout was halted at the 2:04 mark of round two.

8: Takedowns landed in 12 attempts by Cody Stamann in a unanimous decision victory over Terrion Ware at featherweight. Stamman landed at least two takedowns in every stanza and also held a 124-to-78 advantage in total strikes landed.

30: Significant ground strikes landed by Trevin Giles in a second-round knockout victory over James Bochnovic at middleweight. Giles, who finished the contest with ground-and-pound from mount, also went 5-for-5 on takedown attempts.
