By the Numbers: UFC 298

There’s a new king in the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s featherweight division.

Ilia Topuria claimed 145-pound gold in emphatic fashion, as he knocked out Alexander Volkanovski 3:32 into Round 2 of the UFC 298 headliner at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, on Saturday night. At just 27 years old, Topuria is 15-0 with plenty of star potential as the promotion’s first-ever champion from Spain. On the other side, one statistic shows how Father Time might simply have caught up with Volkanovski: Fighters age 35 and older are now 1-22 in UFC title bouts at welterweight and below.

5: Undisputed featherweight champions in UFC history. With his victory on Saturday, Topuria joins a group that includes Jose Aldo, Conor McGregor, Max Holloway and Volkanovski.

4: Consecutive bouts with a knockdown for Topuria, who has floored Volkanovski, Josh Emmett, Bryce Mitchell and Jai Herbert during that stretch. “El Matador” has landed five knockdowns in seven UFC bouts overall.

47: Significant strikes landed by Volkanovski. By comparison, Topuria landed 35. Volkanovski outlanded his foe 26 to 15 in Round 1, as he took the frame on all the cageside judges’ scorecards. The Aussie also held a 21-to-20 edge in the second stanza, but it was Topuria who struck the fight’s decisive blow in the period.

95: Significant strikes landed by Robert Whittaker in a unanimous decision win over Paulo Costa in the evening’s co-main event. Costa, meanwhile, landed 67. Whittaker notably held a 63-to-39 advantage in significant head strikes.

1-3: Record for Costa since 2020. His lone win during that time came against Luke Rockhold, who is no longer on the UFC roster.

7: Consecutive triumphs for Ian Garry, currently the longest active winning streak in the UFC’s welterweight division. Garry took a closely-contested unanimous verdict over Geoff Neal at UFC 298.

21: Significant strike advantage for Garry against Neal. After his UFC debut, Garry has held double-digit significant strike advantages against his next six Octagon foes.

9: Consecutive victories for Merab Dvalishvili at bantamweight (his streak is 10 overall), tying him with training partner Aljamain Sterling for the longest winning streak in the history of the 135-pound division.

5: Takedowns landed in 11 attempts for Dvalishvili. Cejudo, meanwhile, landed just one of seven tries.

79: Career takedowns for Dvalishvili, who passed Clay Guida for third place on the UFC’s all-time list with his work against Cejudo.

9: Combined takedowns landed by Dvalishvili and Aljamain Sterling against Cejudo in the Olympic gold medalist’s last two bouts. Cejudo surrendered just one takedown total — against Demetrious Johnson at UFC 227 — in his first 12 UFC appearances.

167: Total strikes landed by Dvalishvili. By comparison, Cejudo landed 54. “The Machine” also held a 74-to-29 edge in significant strikes landed.

5: Consecutive wins for Anthony Hernandez, tying him with Caio Borralho and Brendan Allen for the second-longest active winning streak in the UFC’s middleweight division. Current champ Dricus Du Plessis holds the top spot with seven straight triumphs. Hernandez submitted Roman Kopylov with a rear-naked choke 3:23 into Round 2 of their main card pairing.

1: Takedown landed in 11 attempts by Hernandez in the first round. In the second stanza, “Fluffy” landed two of three takedowns and attempted two submissions, the second of which resulted in a tapout.

6: Career knockdowns for Amanda Lemos, the most in UFC strawweight history. Lemos floored Mackenzie Dern in the second stanza en route to a unanimous decision triumph in their preliminary matchup.

2: Takedowns landed in two attempts for Lemos. That’s the most by any Dern opponent since Amanda Ribas landed two takedowns against Dern at UFC Fight Night 161 on Oct. 12, 2019.

16: Fights in UFC history to end via leg kicks, after Marcos Rogerio de Lima used a low kick and ground-and-pound to dispatch Junior Tafa 1:14 into Round 2 of their heavyweight bout.

.710: Significant striking accuracy for de Lima, who landed 33 of 46 attempts and 11 of 12 leg kicks. Tafa landed 11 of 27 significant strikes — a 40% success rate.

13:03: Total control time for Rinya Nakamura in a three-round verdict against Carlos Vera at bantamweight. Nakamura landed all three of his takedowns and held a 38-to-12 advantage in significant strikes in the fight.

17: First-round finishes among 17 professional victories for Mingyang Zhang, who knocked out Brendson Ribeiro 1:41 into the opening stanza of their light heavyweight scrap on Saturday night.

56: Significant strikes by which Danny Barlow outlanded Josh Quinlan in their welterweight matchup. Barlow also landed the fight’s only knockdown during the finishing sequence in Round 3.

130: Total strikes landed by Oban Elliott in a unanimous decision triumph against Valentine Woodburn at welterweight. Elliott also held a 70-to-23 edge in significant strikes and logged 8:58 of control time in victory.
