The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday held a matinee show in Newark, New Jersey, with some exciting performances and plenty of finishes. UFC on ESPN 5 featured the most technical submissions at an event, strike totals that boggle the mind and more combined experience going into one fight than any other.
NAPTIME IS OVER: As three fighters -- Clay Guida, Trevin Giles and Lucie Pudilova -- were put to sleep by chokes at this event, UFC on ESPN 5 became the first card in company history to feature three technical submissions. The previous record was two, held by seven different events.
DANGER! HIGH VOLTAGE!: Two fighters, Matt Schnell and Miranda Granger, shared the nickname “Danger” at this event, and both were victorious.
GET THAT CORN OUT OF MY FACE: Colby Covington threw 541 total strikes at Robbie Lawler, setting a record for the most in a single UFC fight by one fighter. It is worth noting that Max Holloway did attempt 507 against Brian Ortega at UFC 231, landing 307 -- far more than Covington’s 201 -- and won the fight at the end of Round 4.
THEY TRULY HAVE SEEN IT ALL: With 59 Octagon appearances between Guida and Jim Miller, the two combined for the most amount of UFC experience of any fight ever.
20-WIN CLUB: Miller rendered Guida unconscious with a choke and in doing so earned his 20th UFC victory. With the win, he joins an illustrious crew that includes Michael Bisping, Georges St. Pierre, Demian Maia and Donald Cerrone.
GOOD NIGHT GUIDA: By putting Guida to sleep with a guillotine choke, Miller earned his ninth submission win inside the Octagon. Only three fighters have submitted more opponents: Maia (10), Royce Gracie (11) and Charles Oliveira (13).
IT’S ALWAYS MILLER TIME: Miller entered the UFC cage for the record-setting 33rd time, although that record will be tied by Cerrone when he faces Justin Gaethje at UFC Fight Night 158 in September.
AND HE IS ONLY 35: When Miller made his UFC debut at UFC 89 in October 2008, 16 of the other 23 fighters competing on this card had yet to make their MMA debuts.
YOU GOTTA PROTECT YA NECK: Guida has now suffered his sixth defeat by submission under the UFC banner, tying Melvin Guillard and Ryan Jensen for the most submission losses in organizational history.
GUILEFUL GERALD: In forcing referee Herb Dean to intervene to save Giles, Gerald Meerschaert recorded his 21st career submission win. Comparatively, he has submitted more fighters than 20 others on the card had in total wins.
YA BLEW IT: Darko Stosic lost two points for landing three groin kicks on Kennedy Nzechukwu and lost a close decision. This is not the first time point deductions have cost a fighter the win: Alex Caceres, Jose Alberto Quinonez and Nate Marquardt have all lost decisions they would have otherwise won after fouls cost them two points.
NOT JUST A ONE-TRICK PONY: By beating Salim Touahri on the scorecards, Mickey Gall recorded his first career win by means other than submission. In all five of his previous victories, Gall had tapped his opponents with rear-naked chokes.
MIGHT AS WELL GIVE IT A TRY: Antonina Shevchenko earned her first career submission victory when she put Pudilova to sleep with a rear-naked choke. In doing so, she also handed Pudilova her first stoppage loss.
THEIR LEGS ARE INDEED LONG ENOUGH: By submitting Jordan Espinosa with a triangle choke, Schnell became the first flyweight in promotional history to tap an opponent with that move.
DANGEROUS DUDE: Needing only 83 seconds to submit Espinosa, Schnell earned the second-fastest submission in divisional history. Only Ben Nguyen’s 49-second rear-naked choke of Tim Elliott at UFC Fight Night 110 in 2017 came quicker.
REMEMBER HER NAME: When she finished Mara Romero Borella with a vicious knee and some follow-up elbows, Lauren Murphy became the seventh female fighter to ever stop an opponent with knees in the UFC. She joins Cat Zingano, Ronda Rousey, Joanna Jedrzejczyk, Germaine de Randamie, Cristiane Justino and Maycee Barber.
INDISCIPLINE: Both Dong Hyun Ma (158) and Cole Williams (176) missed weight by multiple pounds coming into their respective bouts with Scott Holtzman and Claudio Henrique da Silva . Both men lost by stoppage.
NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN: Coming into UFC on ESPN 5, Miller had never finished an opponent in under a minute (31 wins, 21 stoppages), Joaquim Silva had never been finished (12 fights) and Hannah Goldy had never been defeated (five fights).
THE EMINEM CURSE IS ALIVE AND WELL: Touahri walked out to “Drop the World” by Lil’ Wayne featuring Eminem and dropped a decision to Gall. Four of the last five fighters to use Eminem tracks, including Touahri twice, have lost.
BIG WILLIE STYLE: In making her successful UFC debut accompanied by “I’m Comin’” by Will Smith, Granger became the second recorded fighter in promotional history to walk out to a Smith song. The first came with a dance and matching suits, when James Te Huna used “Men in Black” before facing Ryan Jimmo at UFC on Fuel TV 7 in 2013.
