Luc Bondole vs. Chris Herrera

Round 1

Bondole strikes first with a hard kick to the lead leg of the much shorter Herrera, who spends the first minute walking forward, looking for a way inside. The next leg kick from Bondole is less successful, as he slips to the ground and winds up with Herrera in his open guard. Bondole tries a kimura from underneath, while Herrera tries to scoot his man toward the fence. Herrera passes to half guard, alleviating some pressure on his right arm, and Bondole gives up on the hold with just over two minutes on the clock. Trying to pass to side control, Herrera postures up and thumps Bondole’s right side with punches. Bondole posts and stands with one minute left in the round, then shoves Herrera against the fence. Bondole tries to strike in the clinch, throwing knees to the body and elbows over the top, but nothing much lands cleanly.

Round 2

Bondole is on the offensive early in round two, chopping at Herrera with more leg kicks but also running into a few short right hands. Herrera gets one back with an outside leg kick, then sticks a right hand in Bondole’s face while still in the pocket. Bondole throws a side kick to the body, slips to the ground and bounces back up. Bondole lands a leg kick, comes at Herrera with a standing elbow and walks straight into a counter right hand. Bondole drops to his knees, already unconscious, but Herrera lands three or four more right hands before referee Herb Dean can stop the fight.

Fabian Gonzalez vs. Albert Morales

Round 1

Morales leaps at his opponent with a knee to the chest and gets swept back out of range by Gonzalez’s counterpunches. Gonzalez is throwing hard combos, and now he clips Morales with a right hand on the temple. When Gonzalez moves to close the gap, Morales tries a guillotine. Releasing the choke, Morales throws a knee which opens up a cut on Gonzalez’s nose. The bantamweights fight in the clinch, Morales adding more knees, this time to the body. They move to the fence, where Morales wraps up Gonzalez and trips him to the ground. Straight to full mount goes Morales, looking for a guillotine and then throwing elbows, but he fails to secure the position before Gonzalez drives forward and stands. Now it’s Gonzalez on the outside as they tangle against the cage with 2:00 on the clock. They separate and Gonzalez wipes at his face, which is covered in blood from his nose cut. Gonzalez tries a single-leg against the fence but Morales thwarts it, hopping on one leg and controlling Gonzalez’s head with the Thai plum. Gonzalez releases and tries to get busy at the end of the round, but it’s Morales who socks him with a big right hand just before the bell.

Round 2

Gonzalez emerges for round two still bleeding profusely from the cut on the bridge of his nose. Morales pumps some jabs at the spot of the cut, misses with a high kick and walks into a two-piece combo from Gonzalez. Changing tactics, Morales blasts into a double-leg takedown which floors Gonzalez near the fence. Morales can’t hold him down, but as soon as Gonzalez gets back to his feet, Morales ragdolls him straight back down. Blood is leaking into Gonzalez’s eyes as he lies flat on his back, with Morales trying to pass to the side. Morales doesn’t secure the position and gets swept, but he’s back on top in no time, and now he takes Gonzalez’s back. The bantamweights sit up against the fence, Morales in back control, and he applies a deep rear-naked choke that has the bloodied Gonzalez tapping out in no time.

Derek Anderson vs. Danny Navarro

Round 1

Navarro rushes at Anderson with big punches off the bell but doesn’t seem to connect cleanly with any of them. Instead, it’s a takedown which lands for Navarro, then a clinch as Anderson pops back to his feet, only to be held against the fence. Anderson gets some separation but Navarro keeps walking him down, and now his punches are finding a home, clipping “Derek the Barbaric” with jabs and hard right hands. Anderson tries the Thai plum and eats a pair of uppercuts from Navarro before releasing. Navarro hits a trip takedown and passes straight to full mount, wrapping up Anderson’s legs from mount as he sits up near the fence. The taller Anderson is able to stand up and eject Navarro from mount, but a few seconds later, Navarro lands a right hand that knocks out Anderson’s mouthguard.

Round 2

Navarro gets dropped by an Anderson right hand; he gets right back to his feet, but Navarro is clearly in trouble, wobbling around and shooting for a desperate takedown. Anderson stuffs the shot and stalks Navarro around the perimeter of the cage, looking to tee up his dazed opponent for a homerun shot. Two minutes into the round, Navarro seems to have regained his senses, and Anderson appears hesitant to let his hands go. The lightweights go to the clinch, Anderson pinning Navarro against the cage with an underhook. Anderson releases and they go back to moving around the edge of the cage midway through the round. A left hook counter clips Navarro, then a straight right hand, but he fires back with a right hook which draws a nod from Anderson. A double-leg from Navarro is sprawled on, so Navarro lands a leg kick and a thumping right hook. Navarro goes for another shot and eats an uppercut, and Anderson finishes the round walking down Navarro on the outside.

Round 3

Another right hand sends Navarro to the floor, but this time he gets back to his feet and takes Anderson to the ground. Anderson jumps up right away and frees himself from the clinch to resume striking. It’s Anderson coming forward, trading shots with Navarro, who grabs for a high double and can’t find the takedown. Anderson has bloodied Navarro’s nose with stiff jabs, and now he puts Navarro on rubber legs with a pair of hard right-handed counters. Anderson adds a leg kick as Navarro staggers toward the fence, referee Herb Dean telling the wounded man to fight back. Navarro doesn’t go down, but after Anderson lands a couple more shots, referee Dean mercifully stops the fight.

Steve Kozola vs. Jonathan Rivera

Round 1

Kozola is landing hard shots in the first 90 seconds, finding a mark for his right hand on the end of combinations. When Rivera is backed up to the fence, Kozola closes the gap but gets caught in a front headlock and has to back out. Rivera snipes back with a blistering straight right which staggers Kozola, who changes levels for a takedown and manages to floor his man. Kozola scrambles to take the back, but Rivera slips out the back door and winds up in Kozola’s guard. Rivera gets busy in the final minute of the round, working short ground-and-pound from top position.

Round 2

Rivera emerges for round two in a taekwondo-style stance but soon goes back to throwing hands from the orthodox stance, while Kozola does the same. Good head movement from Rivera keeps him out of range of several punches, but Kozola lands a grazing left hand to the temple, then chases down Rivera and mugs him with some hard uppercuts against the fence.

Rivera collapses to the ground, and referee John McCarthy steps in to rescue the unconscious fighter from any further damage.

Dustin Jacoby vs. John Salter

Round 1

Salter strikes from the southpaw stance for the opening 30 seconds, then changes levels and works to take Jacoby to the ground. He brings Jacoby down about one minute into the fight and quickly extracts his head from a loose guillotine. Jacoby tries to roll free from underneath while Salter works to advance from half guard. Salter catches Jacoby rolling and jumps on his back, sinking in both hooks to secure the rear mount. Jacoby goes to a knee, trying to shake off Salter as the round hits the halfway mark. Salter peppers with left hands underneath Jacoby’s armpit, intermittently hunting for a rear-naked choke. With 1:45 on the clock, Salter flattens out Jacoby on his stomach; Jacoby gets back to his knees, but now Salter is landing punches with both hands. Jacoby goes to his side, where he fends off Salter’s choke attempts but continues to absorb punches to the bell.

Round 2

Salter gets another quick takedown and once again attaches himself to the back of Jacoby, this time positioned near the fence. Jacoby takes a knee and Salter loses a hook, keeping his left leg sunk in while controlling Jacoby’s right leg with an arm cradle. Salter rolls Jacoby back to the ground and briefly takes full mount, then traps the right arm when Jacoby rolls to his knees. With one hook in, Salter catches Jacoby in the scramble, applying a rear-naked choke and forcing Jacoby to tap out.

Jason Glaza vs. Everett Cummings

Round 1

Glaza immediately gets in on a shot and floors Cummings with a takedown near the fence. Setting up in side control on Cummings’ right side, Glaza leans across his opponent’s body and tries to crank a keylock on the left arm. Cummings frees the arm, so Glaza starts dropping elbows on his face, then lays a forearm across Cummings’ throat. Still working for the keylock but unable to secure the arm, Glaza sits up and blasts Cummings with some heavy punches from half guard. With 70 seconds on the clock, Glaza drops five or six left hands before settling back down in Cummings’ half guard. Cummings has no answer from his back, unable to escape from underneath the larger man, where he remains until the seconds before the end of the round.

Round 2

Cummings emerges for round two sporting a small cut on his forehead and is immediately taken back to the ground. After completing an easy double-leg against the fence, Glaza postures up in Cummings’ closed guard and thumps the smaller man with heavy right hands. Glaza stands, shucks the legs of Cummings and comes back down to the ground, where he catches Cummings trying to stand and slaps on an anaconda choke. Glaza loses the anaconda and, now on his back, switches to a guillotine choke. Cummings waits out the choke, slips his head loose and immediately turns the corner to take Glaza’s back. Cummings applies a rear-naked choke and Glaza stops struggling right away. A few seconds later, referee Jason Herzog checks Glaza’s arm and, getting no response, calls an end to the fight.

Marius Zaromskis vs. Fernando Gonzalez

Round 1

Zaromskis rushes straight at Gonzalez but takes a couple left hands on the ear, and now it’s “The Menifee Maniac” pushing forward on the Strikeforce veteran. Gonzalez mixes up his punches to the body and head while Zaromskis fires back with jabs and kicks. Uppercuts score for Gonzalez as Zaromskis keeps his head low while punching. Zaromskis lands a couple chopping kicks to the legs of Gonzalez, who takes them and continues to throw power punches. Zaromskis changes levels for a takedown, can’t get it and has to back out when Gonzalez threatens with a guillotine choke. Gonzalez backs up Zaromskis toward the fence and tags the Lithuanian with four or five quick punches. Zaromskis is looking stiff as he backs up toward the fence and Gonzalez comes at him, scoring with body blows and short left hooks in the pocket. A high knee scores for Zaromskis, then the “Whitemare” slips on the follow-up knee. Gonzalez allows him to stand, still keeping Zaromskis’ back to the fence, and the American scores with another punching combination, a knee, and a one-two as Zaromskis circles away with a reddened face. With one minute left in the all-action first round, Gonzalez continues to walk down Zaromskis, doing well to mix up his punches to the body and head. Zaromskis slips throwing a head kick, shoots on Gonzalez’s legs and gets sprawled on. Zaromskis finishes the round finally completing a double-leg just before the bell sounds.

Round 2

Gonzalez clips Zaromskis with a left hook and follows through with a knee to the body. Zaromskis, once again backed up to the fence, answers with a kick to Gonzalez’ lead leg. A jumping knee pushes Gonzalez backward, and now Zaromskis catches a kick from Gonzalez on his shoulder. Gonzalez connects with a gut shot, then a push kick to the breadbasket, but he has to back up as Zaromskis throws a back-elbow and a low kick. A front kick clips Zaromskis on the chin, then a straight left from Gonzalez catches him charging forward. Again, Zaromskis slips throwing a kick, but Gonzalez appears uninterested in any sort of ground fighting and allows him to stand. Zaromskis is still throwing but is looking tired with 30 seconds left in round two. Gonzalez gets hold of his back with a standing rear waistlock, and Zaromskis puts a hand on the mat, defending against the takedown to finish the second frame.

Round 3

Gonzalez blocks a head kick but has to back up, allowing Zaromskis to come off the fence. The Californian reestablishes himself in the center of the cage, pushing Zaromskis back to the outside. Now, Gonzalez catches a kick and hustles Zaromskis to the ground near the fence. Gonzalez tries to take the back but only gets one hook in, which Zaromskis peels away. Zaromskis turns Gonzalez toward the fence as he stands and changes levels for a double-leg attempt, which Gonzalez denies. The welterweights come off the fence with 2:30 remaining in the fight, and referee John McCarthy warns Gonzalez to keep his kicks up after one catches Zaromskis below the belt. Gonzalez sends straight punches down the center as they continue to fight in the pocket. A left high kick clips Zaromskis, who changes levels and floors Gonzalez with a takedown to spend the final 30 seconds on top.

Houston Alexander vs. Virgil Zwicker

Round 1

Zwicker throws a spinning kick and finds Alexander waiting with a level change as he turns around. The UFC veteran brings Zwicker to the floor and pushes him to the fence, where Zwicker sits up as Alexander throws right hands to the body. Zwicker posts and begins to stand, but Alexander whips him back to the canvas and sits up in his half guard to drop short left hands. Alexander buries his head in Zwicker’s chest and flattens out the “Rezdog,” who tries to push off the cage with his feet and escape. Zwicker succeeds in pushing off the fence and using a hip-bump to reverse Alexander with just under two minutes left in the round. Back up to their feet come the 205ers, now with Zwicker sporting a cut on the outside of his left eye. Alexander fakes a level change, then backs away to stay out of range from Zwicker’s jabs. A long, looping left touches Alexander’s chin, but Zwicker isn’t finding much success with his punches otherwise. Both men try to get busy in the final 10 seconds, and it’s Zwicker connecting with a straight right hand to the temple.

Round 2

Zwicker backs up Alexander with a straight right hand, then blasts him with an uppercut when “The Assassin” tries to come back for a double-leg. A leaping knee catches Alexander square on the chin, and when he tries to grab for Zwicker’s legs, the Californian overpowers and shoves him to the ground. Zwicker sits up in Alexander’s half guard now, dropping a few heavy punches before Alexander is able to grab hold of his left arm and close the distance. Zwicker stands over his prone opponent, eats an upkick and then clips Alexander with an uppercut as he gets back to his feet. The light heavyweights reset in the center midway through the round and the fight. Alexander backs up Zwicker with a jab and a pair of punches to the body. Zwicker gets caught off-balance with a low kick that takes out his lead leg, and now it’s Alexander pouncing to set up in top position. Working from Zwicker’s open guard, Alexander lands right hands to the ribs while Zwicker peppers with open-handed palm strikes from underneath.

Round 3

Alexander starts the final round with body punches, putting three or four hard shots on Zwicker’s ribs in the opening minute. Zwicker sticks a few jabs as he cuts angles around Alexander, but neither man is scoring with any volume or consistency through the first two minutes. Zwicker puts a kick across Alexander’s midsection, then hops backward on one leg to defend a single-leg attempt. A right hand stops the progress of Alexander, who’s sitting back and waiting to counter when Zwicker comes to strike. Alexander fakes a level change and gets Zwicker to throw a counter uppercut that catches air. A jab from Alexander snaps back the head of Zwicker with just over one minute left in the bout. Another jab scores for Alexander, then a left hand to the body. Zwicker throws a kick and gets knocked to the ground with a left hand. Alexander allows him to stand, and Zwicker hurts him near the fence with a left hook on the ear. Alexander bounces right back up and keeps swinging, and Zwicker lands a takedown just before the final bell.

Georgi Karakhanyan vs. Bubba Jenkins

Round 1

Karakhanyan throws a leg kick, which is caught by Jenkins and used to slam the Russian-born fighter to the canvas in the center of the cage. As soon as Karakhanyan hits the ground, he’s fishing for a guillotine, wrapping up Jenkins in his guard and squeezing on the choke. Jenkins twice rolls over and eventually frees himself, then jumps back up and resets on his feet. Jenkins hits another takedown and runs straight into another arm-in guillotine. This time, Karakhanyan squeezes until Jenkins goes limp; Karakhanyan screams “he’s out!” repeatedly until referee Herb Dean stops the fight. Karakhanyan jumps over the fence and celebrates with a lap around the cage, victorious in his return to Bellator after nearly four years away.

Bellator Featherweight Title Fight:
Patricio Freire vs. Daniel Straus

Round 1

Straus fires off a left high kick that is deflected by the champion, then a low kick which “Pitbull” catches. Freire lands the first clean strike with a low kick, then charges at Straus with a straight right hand. The southpaw Straus misses with a straight right, slides away to dodge a Freire right hook and counters with a right of his own. A pair of punches from Straus comes up short, but he finds the mark with a counter left and an inside leg kick. Straus cracks Freire with a nice left hook before pushing the champ against the fence with an underhook. The challenger throws a couple knees to the thighs of Pitbull and hooks his left leg, but Freire shoves him away and circles out to the center before Straus can attempt a takedown. Freire comes away from an exchange grabbing his right eye, which has been cut from an unintentional clash of heads. The champion takes a moment to recover, and when the featherweights get back to work, it’s Straus landing combinations and shutting down a takedown attempt from the Brazilian. Freire sidesteps as Straus rushes forward and trips him to the ground, then puts him against the fence as Straus stands back up. Freire connects with an elbow and a pair of left hooks before Straus pushes him off and circles away. An inside thigh kick from Freire catches Straus on the cup just before the end of the round.

Round 2

Straus puts a long, straight left in Freire’s breadbasket and follows with a knee to the body, his shin appearing to clip the Brazilian’s cup. Freire says he’s alright, but the next one catches him on the groin, too, and now Freire is upset. Referee John McCarthy calls time and allows Freire to recover. When action resumes, Pitbull shoots for a takedown and gets stuffed by Straus. A left hand scores for Straus, but he catches Freire with a finger to the eye as the champ charges forward with punches. Referee McCarthy deducts a point for what he deems a low blow. Pitbull grabs for a single-leg when the fight resumes, then angrily shoves Straus to the ground. He catches Straus trying to stand and holds the challenger on his knees with a front headlock. Straus takes a couple punches to the ribs before powering back up and tossing Freire to the canvas from the body lock position. Back up comes Freire, Straus still attached to him, and the champ rolls through to escape. With one minute to go, Straus gets back to his feet and pushes Freire against the fence, but now Freire snaps Straus down to his knees. Straus takes a seat at the base of the fence, absorbs a couple punches and a pair of knees to the body as Pitbull stands over him. Freire takes a knee next to his opponent, allowing Straus to stand before the end of the round.

Round 3

Straus sends a thudding left high kick off the glove of Pitbull and walks the champ around the cage. A body kick lands for Straus, then a straight punch to the midsection. Referee McCarthy warns Straus to “watch the fingers” on his outstretched hand when exchanging. The pace has dropped off midway through the round, with Pitbull sticking to the outside while Straus slowly presses forward. Freire is showing damage on the outside of his right eye, some swelling and bleeding where Straus’ left hands have connected. Another left high kick is blocked by Freire, who reverses a takedown attempt and winds up on top of Straus with a slick hip bump. Straus gets to his knees, then explodes to his feet when Freire threatens to drop back for a heel hook attempt. Straus gets in on a double-leg and just manages to drag Freire to the floor before the bell sounds.

Round 4

Freire touches Straus with a straight right hand, but the challenger keeps coming forward and changes levels to attempt a takedown against the fence. Freire stands him up and turns him around, holding Straus on the cage with an underhook and connecting with a couple short left hands before the American escapes the tie-up. Straus changes levels, briefly grabs Freire’s waist and then comes back up to slug him with a left hook. There’s a jab and a left hand to the body from Straus, then a straight left sends the champ staggering back toward the fence. Straus moves in to clinch and gets reversed again with the same action from Freire, right underhook and left-handed punches. Straus shoves him away and comes forward with peppering punches to the body and head, answered by Pitbull with a nice right cross. Freire grabs the Thai plum and shoots a knee up the center, but his foot lands on the cup of Straus and the challenger collapses to the mat. Freire waves off McCarthy and tries to pound out Straus with hammer fists, but the ref lifts Freire off the ground and pulls him away from the downed fighter. Freire thinks he’s won, but Straus is given time to recover, which he does after a minute or so. Freire’s face is a mess as action resumes, cut on the right eyelid and leaking blood down into his eye. Freire hits a takedown with 65 seconds on the clock and punches the body of Straus, who works for a kimura and gives up his back in the process. Freire has both hooks in, flattening out Straus and sinking in a rear-naked choke with only seconds remaining. The choke is in, left arm under Straus’ chin, and Freire is squeezing, trying to get the finish before the end of the round. Straus taps out, and Patricio “Pitbull” Freire has retained his Bellator featherweight title with a fourth-round submission.
