UFC Fight Night 38 Bonuses: Gustafsson Banks 100K; Manuwa, Nelson Earn 50K Apiece

Not only is Alexander Gustafsson the UFC’s No. 1 contender-in-waiting at light heavyweight, but he is also $100,000 richer after his performance at UFC Fight Night 38 on Saturday.
“The Mauler” and Jimi Manuwa earned “Fight of the Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their light heavyweight headliner at the O2 Arena in London, a bout which Gustafsson won via technical knockout 1:18 into the second round. Gustafsson hurt his opponent with a knee in the clinch and sealed the triumph with follow-up punches to bring a halt to Manuwa’s 14-fight winning streak. For his efforts, Gustafsson also captured one of the card’s $50,000 “Performance of the Night” awards.
Gunnar Nelson was the other “Performance of the Night” recipient, as the highly-touted Iceland native submitted Omari Akhmedov with a first-round guillotine in their welterweight clash to capture $50,000. The outcome was never in doubt. Nelson drove Akhmedov to the canvas with a left hand early and quickly achieved mount. After softening his adversary with a series of elbows, Nelson was able to secure the decisive choke during a scramble.
UFC officials announced the awards at a post-fight news conference following the conclusion of Saturday’s event.
