On Oct. 24, 2009, the Ultimate Fighting Championship was in Los Angeles for UFC 104 at the Staples Center.

In the main event, light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida put his light heavyweight title on the line against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. After five thrillingly evenly-matched rounds, Machida won the controversial decision and retained his title. In the co-main event, Cain Velasquez continued his ascent up the heavyweight rankings by TKOing Ben Rothwell in the second round.

The rest of the main card featured Gleison Tibau beating Josh Neer, Joe Stevenson submitting Spencer Fisher and Anthony Johnson TKOing Yoshiyuki Yoshida, while on the prelims Ryan Bader, Pat Barry, Chael Sonnen and Stefan Struve all had their hands raised.

UFC 104 had an estimated buyrate of 500,000 and an attendance of 14,982 for a gate of $1,913,093.
