This Day in MMA History: Sept. 5

On Sept. 5, 2007, the World Extreme Cagefighting went to the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas for WEC 30. The card saw two titles on the line. Both champions successfully defended their belts.

In the main event, lightweight champion Rob McCullough knocked out Richard Crunkilton in the first round. It wound up being his only title defense of the WEC lightweight title. He went on to lose the crown in his next fight when he was knocked out by Jamie Varner. It would also be the last time he won a championship in any promotion. For Crunkilton, it was the only time he fought for title and was the first time he was finished in a fight.

The co-main event saw bantamweight champion Chase Beebe take on Rani Yahya, where he defended the title for the first time. Like McCullough, it was his only defense as he went on to lose the strap in his next fight. For Yahya, it was the only time he has fought for a major championship.

Meanwhile, the prelims hosted Donald Cerrone vs. Kenneth Alexander; “Cowboy” submitted him in just 56 seconds by a triangle neck crank. However, the fight was overturned to a no-contest after Cerrone tested positive for Hydrochlorothiazide. It is the only no-contest on his record and the only known instance of him failing a drug test.
