By The Numbers: UFC 283

The Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight championship is vacant no longer.

Jamahal Hill passed the crucible of a five-round fight against Glover Teixeira with flying colors, winning a largely dominant unanimous decision in the UFC 283 headliner at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night. In victory, Hill becomes the first competitor from Dana White’s Contender Series to capture a UFC title and the 16th light heavyweight champion in promotion history overall.

Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC 283, with statistics courtesy of UFCStats.com.

232: Significant strikes landed by Hill, a single-fight UFC light heavyweight record and the fifth most in promotion history. By comparison, Teixeira landed 75. “Sweet Dreams” outlanded his foe 46 to 12 in Round 1, 51 to 21 in Round 2, 44 to 17 in Round 3, 79 to 18 in Round 4 and 12 to 7 in Round 5.

180: Significant head strikes for Hill. Teixeira, meanwhile, landed 52. Hill also outlanded his opponent 42 to 19 in body strikes, 18 to 5 in clinch strikes and 26 to 5 in ground strikes.

15: Takedowns successfully defended by Hill. Teixeira landed just two of his 17 attempts in the fight, grounding his opponent once in Round 2 and once in Round 5. Both fighters secured 3:26 of control time in the bout.

4: Consecutive victories for Hill. Prior to going the distance against Teixeira, the Grand Rapids, Mich., native scored successive KO/TKO finishes against Jimmy Crute, Johnny Walker and Thiago Santos.

7: Between-rounds stoppages in UFC championship history after the flyweight title fight between Brandon Moreno and Deiveson Figueiredo ended prior to the fourth frame. The bout was called off by a cageside physician after three rounds due to Figueiredo’s eye being completely swollen shut. The others: Matt Hughes vs. Gil Castillo (UFC 40); Tito Ortiz vs. Ken Shamrock (UFC 40); Randy Couture vs. Vitor Belfort (UFC 49); B.J. Penn vs. Sean Sherk (UFC 84); Georges St. Pierre vs. B.J. Penn (UFC 94) and Max Holloway vs. Brian Ortega (UFC 231).

6: Finishes for Brandon Moreno in the UFC at flyweight, tying him with Joseph Benavidez and Alexandre Pantoja for the third most in the history of the division. Only Figueiredo and Demetrious Johnson have more, with seven apiece.

85: Total strikes landed by Moreno. By comparison, Figueiredo landed 24. Moreno also held a 48-to-19 edge in significant strikes.

6:52: Total control time for Moreno, who was successful on three of six takedowns. Figueiredo logged just 35 seconds of control time in three rounds, but he did threaten his opponent with two submission attempts.

15: UFC victories for Jessica Andrade, tying her with Amanda Nunes for the most of any woman in the Las Vegas-based promotion. Andrade took a lopsided unanimous decision triumph against Lauren Murphy in a featured flyweight bout at UFC 283.

231: Significant strikes landed by Andrade, the most ever for a UFC women’s flyweight fight. That figure is also the second-largest for a three-round bout in UFC history behind the 238 significant strikes Nate Diaz landed against Donald Cerrone at UFC 141. Murphy, meanwhile, landed 100 significant strikes in defeat.

6: Instances in UFC history where a fighter lands 200 or more significant strikes in a three-round bout. Andrade is the only athlete to have done it twice. The first occasion came when she landed 206 significant strikes at UFC Fight Night 30 in 2013.

47: Significant leg strikes landed by Andrade, a UFC career high. She surpassed her previous best of 19 by landing 27 significant leg strikes in the first round alone.

17: Career first-round finishes for Johnny Walker, who dispatched Paul Craig with punches 2:16 into the opening stanza of their light heavyweight clash on Saturday. Walker has finished all six of his UFC victories inside of a round.

24: UFC appearances for Mauricio Rua, who retired from MMA following a first-round TKO loss to Ihor Potiera on Saturday night. That total ranks No. 1 all-time in light heavyweight history, one ahead of Ovince St. Preux and Glover Teixeira.

0:49: Time of Gabriel Bonfim’s first-round guillotine of Mounir Lazzez. That’s the sixth-fastest submission victory in the history of the UFC’s welterweight division. The fastest: Dennis Hallman tapped out Matt Hughes with an armbar 29 seconds into the opening stanza of their clash at UFC 29 on Dec. 16, 2000.

18: Finishes among 18 professional victories for Jailton Almeida, who dispatched Shamil Abdurakhimov with ground-and-pound 2:56 into Round 2 of their heavyweight clash. “Maladhinho” has earned seven triumphs by KO/TKO and 11 via submission.

4: Finishes in UFC competition for Almeida, tying him with Shavkat Rakhmonov and Ilia Topuria for the fourth-longest active finishing streak in the Las Vegas-based promotion.

45: Significant strikes landed by Almeida. By comparison, Abdurakhimov landed just one in a lopsided defeat.

4: Consecutive KO/TKO defeats in UFC competition for the 41-year-old Abdurakhimov. In addition to Almeida, the Dagestani heavyweight has been finished by Sergei Pavlovich, Chris Daukaus and Curtis Blaydes.

11: Unofficial media scorecards, of the 16 tracked by MMADecisions.com, that scored the bantamweight fight between Luan Lacerda and Cody Stamann in favor of Lacerda. However, judges Derek Cleary, Rafael Ferreira and Hallison Pontes all submitted 29-28 tallies for Stamann to give the American a unanimous decision triumph.

103: Significant strikes landed by Stamann. Lacerda, meanwhile, landed 80. Stamman outlanded his adversary 31 to 29 in Round 1, 52 to 33 in Round 2 and 20 to 18 in Round 3.

.690: Significant striking accuracy for Ismael Bonfim, who landed 34 of 49 attempts en route to a spectacular flying knee KO of Terrance McKinney 2:17 into Round 2 of their 155-pound matchup. McKinney, meanwhile, landed just 14 of 49 significant strikes — a 28 percent success rate.

8: Sibling pairs who are currently active in the UFC. That includes Ismael Bonfim and Gabriel Bonfim, both of whom made their Octagon debuts at UFC 283. Ismael Bonfim had an emphatic knockout of Terrance McKinney in a preliminary lightweight bout, while Gabriel Bonfim tapped Mounir Lazzez with a mounted guillotine choke in less than a minute at welterweight.

1: Sibling pair to debut in the UFC and win their fights on the same night. The Bonfim brothers became the first to accomplish the feat at UFC 283.

92: Total strikes by which Nicholas Dalby outlanded Warlley Alves in their preliminary welterweight clash. Dalby outlanded his opponent 51 to 25 in Round 1, 52 to 20 in Round 2 and 64 to 30 in Round 3. Dalby also held a 119-to-66 advantage in significant strikes landed. Dalby defeated Alves via split decision.

219: Combined signiificant strikes landed by Josiane Nunes (102) and Zarah Fairn dos Santos (117) in their women’s featherweight clash. Though she didn’t outland her opponent in any round, Nunes’ aggression helped propel her to a unanimous decision triumph.
