Team Nova Uniao stood tall at UFC 169, as both Renan Barao and Jose Aldo retained their titles at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., on Saturday night. While both champions will return back to Brazil with championship belts in tow, they took very different paths to victory.

Barao dispatched Urijah Faber in shockingly quick fashion in the evening’s headliner, stopping the Team Alpha Male star 3:42 into the opening round. While the stoppage was widely disputed, the champion had been completely dominant up until that point. Meanwhile, Aldo took a little bit longer in the co-main event, outpointing a game Ricardo Lamas over 25 minutes in their featherweight scrap. 6: Finishes for Barao in UFC/WEC competition, tying him with Brian Bowles for most in bantamweight history.

9: Bantamweight victories in UFC and WEC competition for Barao, tying him with Dominick Cruz for second most in the history of the division. Scott Jorgensen has the most with 10.

17: Takedowns defended, in 17 attempts thus far for Barao in his UFC tenure. No fighter in promotion history has stopped the first 20 takedowns attempted against them. Jon Jones got to 16 before Alexander Gustafsson was able to ground him at UFC 165.

2,071: Days since Faber’s last victory in a title fight, a five-round verdict over Jens Pulver at WEC 34.

37: Total strikes landed by Barao in the abbreviated 135-pound title bout. Faber landed nine strikes in defeat.

33: Consecutive bouts without a defeat for Barao, whose lone career loss came in his pro debut on April 14, 2005.

258: Significant strikes by which Aldo has outlanded his opponents in six UFC bouts since arriving from the now-defunct World Extreme Cagefighting promotion. Aldo has outlanded his foes 589 to 331 in those contests. The Nova Uniao star outlanded Lamas 62 to 41 in significant strikes in the co-main event.

.897: Takedown defense for Jose Aldo heading into UFC 169, which ranked him No. 4 all-time in promotion history behind Jon Jones (95.8 percent), Gleison Tibau (91.9) and Eddie Wineland (90.9). The Brazilian maintained his stellar track record against Lamas, successfully stopping five of his opponent’s six takedown attempts.

.280: Significant striking accuracy for Lamas in the five-round featherweight title clash. “The Bully” landed 41 of 146 significant strikes, well below his career rate of 40 percent. Aldo ranks No. 6 in UFC history in significant striking defense.

10: Bouts that went to decision at UFC 169, the most decisions at any UFC event. UFC 161, which took place in Winnipeg, was the previous leader with nine.

59: Significant strikes by which Alistair Overeem outlanded Frank Mir during their heavyweight clash. The massive Dutchman outlanded his opponent 30 to 1 in round one, 14 to 2 in round two and 18 to 0 in round three. Overeem also held a 139-to-5 edge in total strikes.

21: Submissions attempted by Mir during his UFC career, tying him for No. 9 in UFC history behind Martin Kampmann. Mir attempted a guillotine choke in the second round against Overeem.

7-9: Record for Mir in bouts that end via knockout, technical knockout or decision. The former UFC champion is 9-0 in contests that end via tapout.

127: Average weight for John Lineker during his six-bout UFC tenure. The Brazilian flyweight has weighed in at 126 pounds (twice), 127 (twice), 128 and 129. Lineker lost a unanimous decision to Ali Bagautinov in their flyweight clash.

30: Total strike advantage for Jamie Varner during the second round of his knockout loss to Abel Trujillo. While the former WEC champion appeared to be getting the better of his opponent during the frame, it was Trujillo who landed the decisive blow to earn the stoppage 2:32 into the period.

.470: Significant striking accuracy for John Makdessi in his decision loss over Alan Patrick Silva Alves; the Tristar Gym representative landed 61 of129 significant strikes in the bout. Makdessi’s career significant striking rate prior to UFC 169 was .761, good for No. 3 in promotion history.

52: Total strikes by which Chris Cariaso outlanded Danny Martinez in their flyweight bout. Cariaso also held a 73-33 edge in significant strikes in the fight, which he won via unanimous decision. Martinez, meanwhile, took a different approach, going five for 14 on takedown attempts.

20: Takedowns landed by Tom Watson’s opponents in four UFC bouts. All four foes, including Nick Catone, who captured a split-decision over “Kong” on Saturday,” landed five takedowns against the former British Association of Mixed Martial Arts standout. Catone, meanwhile, has taken down all eight of his UFC opponents at least once.

19: Takedowns defended, in 23 attempts, by Al Iaquinta during his current three-fight winning streak in the UFC. “The Ultimate Fighter 15” alum stuffed seven of eight takedowns from Kevin Lee en route to a unanimous decision triumph at UFC 169.

6: Fighters (Gasan Umalatov, Tony Martin, Rashid Magomedov, Andy Enz, Kevin Lee and Danny Martinez) making their Octagon debuts at UFC 169. Including the bout where Magomedov squared off with Martin, the newcomers posted a 1-5 mark on the evening.
