This Month’s MMA Birthdays: Conor McGregor Turns 30

He remains the brightest star in the mixed martial arts sky, even though he has not fought in nearly 20 months. Former two-division Ultimate Fighting Championship titleholder Conor McGregor will celebrate his 30th birthday on July 14.

The SBG Ireland lynchpin has kept his name in the headlines for all the wrong reasons in recent months, his dolly attack on a charter bus carrying fighters overshadowing and singlehandedly reshaping UFC 223 in April. Glass from a shattered window took out both Michael Chiesa and Ray Borg, resulting in McGregor’s arrest and a public-relations nightmare for the promotion. The “Notorious” Irishman has not fought since he stopped Eddie Alvarez with second-round punches to capture the undisputed lightweight crown in November 2016 and become the first fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two divisions simultaneously. McGregor was also in possession of the featherweight belt at the time but was later stripped of both championships due to inactivity. He went on to face Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a blockbuster boxing match in August, banking millions while losing by 10th-round technical knockout. Though talk of a potential return to MMA continues, McGregor remains on the sidelines.
