Ray Wood vs. Chris Jones

Round 1

Wood puts a pair hard side kicks on the body of Jones, who switches stances a few times in the opening minute. Wood thinks he’s got Jones hurt with a punch and comes sailing at the Texan with a flying knee, but Jones dodges it and puts Wood on his back near the fence. Straight back to his feet comes Wood to continue his attack on Jones, who may still be trying to clear the cobwebs. Soon after, Wood puts a kick on Jones’ cup; referee Kerry Hatley pauses the action so Jones can recover from the foul.

Wood put the screws to Jones.
Action resumes with just over three minutes on the clock, and Wood goes right back to his kicks, trying to chop out Jones’ legs now. Wood tries some knees in the Thai clinch but gets wrapped up by Jones and hugged against the fence. Wood escapes the clinch with a knee to Jones’ face and walks him down to deliver some more leg kicks. Jones, who missed the featherweight limit by seven pounds yesterday, seems to be fading fast. Wood lands a kick to the body and, in the same motion, whips around to drop Jones with a beautiful spinning back fist. Jones hits the deck and Wood tacks on a few more punches to force referee Hatley
into action.

The Result

Ray Wood def. Chris Jones via TKO (Spinning Back Fist and Punches) R1 3:10

Chance Rencountre vs. Justin Patterson

Round 1

Rencountre flicks out a few punches but comes up short, then grabs for Patterson’s knees and gets denied on an early takedown attempt. Patterson presses forward on the taller man and gets popped with a few jabs, then a hard one-two from his fellow southpaw. Rencountre is starting to find his target about two minutes into the fight, placing some hard left hands on the side of Patterson’s head. Rencountre gets hold of Patterson and whips him to the ground, and now it’s “Black Eagle” in side control on Patterson’s right. The ground fighting doesn’t last long as Patterson rolls to his knees and escapes to his feet. Rencountre’s long reach is helping him out late in the round as he reaches over Patterson’s punches to deliver more left hands. Rencountre lands a lazy leg kick and gets tagged with a stiff jab, then another.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Rencountre
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Rencountre
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Rencountre

Round 2

Patterson opens the scoring in the second frame with some clean jabs which snap back Rencountre’s head and redden his face. Rencountre, meanwhile, is coming up short as he tries to counter with overhand shots off his back foot. Patterson easily stuffs a takedown attempt, pushes down on Rencountre’s head and walks away. Midway through the round, things seem to be turning in Patterson’s favor, but as the welterweights hit the two-minute mark, it’s Rencountre with a quick takedown near the fence. He tries to jump on the back of the kneeling Patterson’s but is unable to keep him on the canvas. Patterson works back to his feet, Rencountre still hanging all over him, trying to trip him back to the ground. Patterson breaks free with 40 seconds left in the round and goes back to walking his opponent around the cage until the end of the round.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Patterson
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Patterson
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Patterson

Round 3

Patterson lands three or four solid leg kicks to begin the final frame, then touches Rencountre with a reaching right hand over the top. Rencountre takes a kick to the gut, tries to grab hold of the leg but can’t wrangle it. Patterson is on the march now, constantly pressuring Rencountre, and he steps into the pocket to place another right hand on the Oklahoman’s face.

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: D. Mandel/Sherdog.com

A bloody Patterson took the split.
One-twos and leg kicks continue to connect for Patterson; one kick is caught by Rencountre and nearly converted into a takedown, but Patterson escapes smoothly. With two minutes on the clock, Rencountre seems to sting Patterson with a right hook, but when Rencountre tries to follow up, he walks into yet another jab. Rencountre catches Patterson ducking low and lands a hard outside leg kick. He shoots for Patterson’s legs and gets whacked with a spinning back fist. Down to the final 30 seconds now, Patterson is still coming forward, trying to trap Rencountre near the fence.

Patterson sprawls on Rencountre’s final takedown attempt, and that’s where it ends. This one will be decided by the judges.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Patterson (29-28 Patterson)
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Patterson (29-28 Patterson)

Ricky Turcios vs. Steve Garcia

Round 1

Turcios scores with a few body kicks in the opening minute and grins wide at Garcia, who presses right back and walks Turcios backward. Garcia scores with a knee that gets Turcios’ attention and sends “Pretty Ricky” grabbing for a clinch on the fence. Garcia escapes the tie-up with an overhook, pushing Turcios back to the middle of the cage. Turcios takes a slapping kick to the face and opts for another clinch, though Garcia breaks out of this one, too. Another short clinch ends with Turcios connecting on a couple short punches. Garcia comes back to the center, clashes kicks with Turcios and pulls him to the ground in an awkward position. The bantamweights jump back to their feet and Turcios goes shooting for a takedown, landing them back on the fence. Turcios grabs the Thai clinch, can’t land anything to the head and settles for a knee to Garcia’s body. Garcia scores with two or three hard elbows when he finds space in the clinch. Turcios adds a couple more knees to the body before Garcia reverses and takes his back, dragging Turcios to the canvas to try a last-second rear-naked choke at the bell.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Turcios
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Turcios
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Turcios

Round 2

Garcia pumps his right hand in Turcios’ face, dodges a high kick and smacks him with a left hook. Turcios shoots low, pushing Garcia to the fence to go vertical again and initiate another clinch. Turcios’ position is broken up by a knee from Garcia, who circles off the fence and back to the middle. Garcia gets hold of Turcios and whips him to the ground again. Despite nearly falling into full mount, Garcia can’t keep Turcios on the canvas. The bantamweights fight back to their feet for a moment, then it’s Turcios putting Garcia on the ground, this time square in the center of the cage. Turcios drops a series of heavy elbows on Garcia’s face as they enter the final two minutes of the round. Garcia is hunting for a triangle from the bottom but can’t get his legs up to snare the shorter man. Turcios just keeps mashing away with elbows and short punches, so Garcia decides it’s time to scoot backward to the fence. Once there, Garcia works back up to spend the final 20 seconds of the round on his feet.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Turcios
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Turcios
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Turcios

Round 3

Turcios wastes no time in putting Garcia’s back against the fence; 30 seconds into the round, Turcios hits a takedown. Garcia scrambles up right away but can’t break loose of Turcios’ grasp. Turcios drops low for a high single-leg attempt but has to be wary, as the rangy Garcia looks to step around and climb on his back. Garcia creates some space and tries to push forward on Turcios, who catches a kick from the “Mean Machine” and converts it into another takedown. Garcia gets back up but once again cannot escape from Turcios, who is sticking to Garcia like glue here in the final round.

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: D. Mandel/Sherdog.com

Turcios outworked Garcia for the W.
Turcios trips his man down to one knee and tries to jump on his back, but Garcia shakes him on the way back up. Turcios just keeps coming and hits another takedown, but again Garcia stands. Inside the final minute now, Turcios continues to press Garcia against the wall. Garcia fishes for a guillotine as Turcios leans over to grab at his legs, but Turcios is wise to it and stands upright. With 10 seconds left, Turcios releases and steps back, and both men begin swinging for the fences in a wild final exchange.

Neiman Gracie vs. Roger Carroll

Round 1

Carroll catches a body kick from Gracie and pushes the jiu-jitsu practitioner against the fence. Gracie reverses almost immediately, trips Carroll to the ground and works to pass guard. Gracie stands up to improve his position, but while he’s there, Carroll grabs for a heel hook. Gracie drops back to the mat, and now the welterweights engage in a brief leglock battle near the fence. Carroll abandons his submission and sits up to punch at Gracie, who releases his hold, too. Gracie stands again, stacks up Carroll and has to defend another leglock attempt. Carroll rolls to his knees and quickly has his back taken by Gracie, who locks up the position with a body triangle. Carroll buries his chin and locks down Gracie’s arms to fend off the rear-naked choke as they fight on the floor with 90 seconds on the clock. Gracie lands a few elbows and punches, trying to soften up Carroll for the RNC, but “The Leprechaun” is defending well. Carroll goes belly down in the last 20 seconds and absorbs a few solid punches to the head, but he’ll survive to see another round.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Gracie
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Gracie
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Gracie

Round 2

Carroll wraps up his opponent and hugs him against the cage, only to be tripped to the ground by Gracie once again. Gracie goes straight to back-mount, applies the body triangle and drops punches as Carroll slowly crawls around on his knees, looking for an escape. Two minutes in, Gracie stops punching and leans forward to resume his search for the RNC, but again Carroll tucks his chin and stays out of danger. Gracie goes back to punching, and this time the strikes nearly gets Carroll to expose his neck. Gracie still can’t find the opening for the choke but he continues to ride on Carroll’s back, as he has for nearly the entire round. It’s all defense from Carroll in the final minute, just trying to stay out of submission danger. Gracie peels off the back to try an armbar in the dying moments of the round, but Carroll is saved by the bell.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-8 Gracie
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Gracie
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-8 Gracie

Round 3

Gracie has Carroll back on the ground within 20 seconds, but this time the welterweights are nearer to the center of the cage. With Gracie kneeling in his open guard, Carroll throws a few heel strikes at the BJJ specialist’s legs. Carroll rolls to his knees, looking to escape, but Gracie once again catches him in the transition and takes his back.

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: D. Mandel/Sherdog.com

Carroll had no answers for Gracie.
The fighters are back in the same position where they’ve spent the majority of the fight, with Gracie attached to Carroll’s back via body triangle, peppering with punches and hunting for a choke. Eventually, Gracie gives up on the RNC and just tries a face crank, but Carroll peels away his opponent’s hands. Inside the final minute, Gracie begins angling off the back, setting up an armbar attempt on Carroll’s left arm. Gracie switches to a triangle and drops to his back, but Carroll stands up and steps over to escape the final sub attempt of the bout.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-8 Gracie (30-25 Gracie)
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Gracie (30-27 Gracie)
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-8 Gracie (30-25 Gracie)

Jermayne Barnes vs. Derek Palmer

Round 1

Palmer slugs down the middle and forces Barnes to take a few steps backward after a pair of right hands. Barnes’ back hits the fence and he spins around to drop levels, then lifts and slams Palmer to the ground. Palmer posts ands stands, still held against the fence, and now Barnes drops to complete another takedown. Barnes lands in side control and drops a few punches on Palmer but can’t keep him on the floor. Palmer struggles back to his feet and looks exhausted as he separates, dropping his hands to his waist. Palmer turns his back to Barnes at one point, then turns back around and decides to continue fighting, swinging wildly and backing up Barnes to the fence. Barnes reverses the clinch and pulls down Palmer’s head to deliver a pair of knees, then drags him back to the mat for another takedown. Palmer tries to throw up an armbar but Barnes stacks him up and lands a few right hands which force Palmer to release the limb.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Barnes
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Barnes
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Barnes

Round 2

Barnes slammed and pounded Palmer out.
Barnes comes out looking for another takedown and shoots low as he and Palmer hit the wall. He stands up with Palmer slung over his shoulder, turns away from the fence and slams Palmer violently to the mat, landing in side control. Palmer tries to hold on to a headlock but soon recognizes the danger and releases, instead kicking up his legs to trap Barnes’ right arm in between them. Barnes yanks the limb free and passes straight over to full mount, where he begins banging on Palmer with elbows and punches. Most of the shots seem to bounce off Palmer’s arms, but after a few strikes sneak through, Palmer taps out in submission.

The Result

Jermayne Barnes def. Derek Palmer via TKO (Submission to Punches) R2 1:17

Sirwan Kakai vs. Joe Taimanglo

Round 1

Taimanglo presses out from the center of the cage in the southpaw stance, while Kakai moves in angles around the outside, looking to counter. The bantamweights break their opening-minute stalemate when Taimanglo leaps into the air and just misses Kakai’s chin with a flying knee. The action is picking up now as both men swing hard punches, though they both come up short. Taimanglo wades into the pocket with his hands low and gets decked with a right hook. “Baby Joe” eats it and swings back, dropping Kakai to one knee with a right hook of his own. Kakai ducks under the next punch from Taimanglo and drives him against the fence, looking for a double-leg takedown. Taimanglo sprawls on the shot and catches the kneeling Kakai in a D’arce choke. Taimanglo is patient, adjusting the submission and rolling through to try an anaconda choke. Kakai breaks the grip and rolls back to his knees, then drives forward as Taimanglo drops to guard, now looking for a guillotine choke. “Zohan” breaks out of this with greater ease and now socks Taimanglo with short, hard hammerfists from guard. Taimanglo works back to his feet in the closing seconds but is taken down again just before the bell.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Taimanglo
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Taimanglo
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Taimanglo

Round 2

The bantamweights are off to another cautious start in the second round, with a few brief clinches on the fence punctuating stretches of inactivity on the feet. Taimanglo breaks away from one clinch with a pair of punches, then drops off again until two minutes into the round, when he swipes a right hand across Kakai’s face. Kakai takes a leg kick and counters over the top with a right straight. With 90 seconds remaining in the round, Kakai lands a right hook, then a one-two. Inside the final minute, Kakai tries to get inside and tie up, but he’s easily brushed away by Taimanglo. “Baby Joe” looks for a late takedown of his own and finishes the round holding Kakai against the cage.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Taimanglo
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-10
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Taimanglo

Round 3

Taimanglo leans in to throw a straight right to the body and gets countered by Kakai’s left hook. One minute in, Kakai catches Taimanglo near the fence, wraps up his legs in a high double and slams him to the ground. Taimanglo springs back to his feet and turns the tables by trying a double of his own against the wall. Kakai defends well, breaks loose and circles back to the center, now two minutes into the final round. Kakai wants another takedown but Taimanglo stifles the next attempt and again reverses the position to work for a double.

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: D. Mandel/Sherdog.com

'Baby Joe's' strong opening 10 minutes won
him the unanimous decision.
Kakai fends off the Guamanian again and the bantamweights are back to striking. Kakai scores with another nice right-handed counter, shoots on Taimanglo near the fence and briefly pulls him to the mat. Once more, Taimanglo bounces back to his feet and attempts to take down Kakai against the cage. Kakai drives a pair of elbows into the side of Taimanglo’s head before breaking away with 70 seconds left to fight. Kakai lands a nasty leg kick and stuffs another shot from the fading Taimanglo, who’s now standing with his hands by his waist. Taimanglo finds some energy to hold Kakai against the fence, but it’s Kakai getting the last word with a right hook-left cross which turns Taimanglo’s head
from side to side.

Goiti Yamauchi vs. Bubba Jenkins

Round 1

Yamauchi pushes forward early on his fellow southpaw, keeping a wide, flat-footed stance as he creeps toward Jenkins near the fence. Jenkins chops at the outside of Yamauchi’s lead leg with a few kicks. Yamauchi grabs for a single-leg takedown, lifts the leg high and tries to dump Jenkins to the ground. The wrestler exhibits great balance by balancing on his free leg and planting a hand on the mat while Yamauchi works for the takedown. Yamauchi releases the leg after a few seconds and instead jumps on the standing Jenkins’ back. Yamauchi secures the position with both hooks in, hanging his weight on Jenkins for the better part of a minute. Jenkins throws punches over his shoulder and buries his chin as Yamauchi hunts for a rear-naked choke. Yamauchi switches to a body triangle and wraps his right arm around Jenkins’ face again, but he still can’t get under the American’s chin. Jenkins continues to stand against the fence with Yamauchi on his back, now inside the last minute of the round. Yamauchi fishes for the RNC for the final minute but can’t find the submission. He hops off the back with seconds to go, and Jenkins spins around to land a quick right hand before the bell.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-8 Yamauchi
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Yamauchi
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-8 Yamauchi

Round 2

Jenkins scores with five or six good leg kicks before exploding into a takedown and flooring Yamauchi at the base of the fence. Yamauchi uses half-butterfly guard as he leans left, trying to isolate Jenkins’ right arm. Jenkins shifts his head to that side, so Yamauchi switches to attack the left arm, grabbing for a kimura from guard. The armlock doesn’t seem to be materializing for Yamauchi, but it has succeeded in slowing Jenkins’ progress on the ground. Midway through the round, Jenkins drops a few right hands on Yamauchi’s ribs before pulling his left arm free. Jenkins continues to land sporadic punches down the stretch until the 70-second mark, when Yamauchi gets caught trying to kick off the fence and absorbs a pair of thumping left hands to the face. Jenkins stands with 30 seconds on the clock, dodges a few upkicks and comes back down to Yamauchi’s guard, landing another left hand before time runs out.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Jenkins
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Jenkins
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Jenkins

Round 3

Jenkins pushes Yamauchi backward with kicks to the body, then comes charging on the Brazilian’s legs and once again plants him at the base of the fence. The featherweights are back in the same position as last round, with Yamauchi jammed up against the cage, unable to do much off his back as Jenkins bears down on him. Yamauchi gives a frustrated look toward his corner as he’s pulled off the fence and flattened out.

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: D. Mandel/Sherdog.com

Jenkins won some confusing scorecards.
He kicks off the fence and rolls up underneath Jenkins, trying to catch the American’s right arm for an armbar. Yamauchi hooks Jenkins’ back leg with his free arm, making sure Jenkins stays down on one knee. After a 30-second scare, Jenkins pulls the arm free and once again flattens out Yamauchi from inside open guard. Yamauchi keeps shifting underneath, looking for a Hail Mary submission. He looks to have hold of an arm just before the bell, but Jenkins slams his way free and jumps to his feet as the final bell sounds.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Jenkins (28-28 Draw)
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Jenkins (29-28 Jenkins)
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Jenkins (28-28 Draw)

Fernando Gonzalez vs. Gilbert Smith

Round 1

Gonzalez’s first punch of the fight lands behind his opponent’s ear and seems to momentarily unsteady the footing of Smith. Quickly balancing himself, Smith resets and drives in low on the legs of Gonzalez, executing a quick takedown at the foot of the fence. Gonzalez sweeps to top position but has to fight off a Smith guillotine attempt. The welterweights stand up against the fence with Smith still holding the headlock, but Gonzalez breaks loose after slamming him to the ground and landing in side control. Smith stands again, tries to turn around and drive on Gonzalez’s legs but turns right into a knee strike which lands on his face. Smith eats the knee and keeps driving to put Gonzalez down at the midway point of the round. Gonzalez keeps punching off his back and soon works back to hs feet, where he shuts down Smith’s next shot. Now it’s Smith on his knees, his left side flush to the fence with the punching Gonzalez on his right in riding position. Smith goes for the legs and winds up with Gonzalez sprawling on him from north-south position. Smith keeps going but drives into a guillotine attempt from Gonzalez, who uses the submission threat to sweep back on top. The 170-pounders continue to swap positions inside the final minute as Smith hits the switch and stacks up Gonzalez on the fence, landing some short right hands before the bell.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Gonzalez
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Gonzalez
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Gonzalez

Round 2

Smith snaps off a few hard leg kicks and tries to thunder his way inside with an uppercut, but Gonzalez shells up and the punches bounce off his arms. Gonzalez keeps his mitts high to deflect more power punches from Smith, then sprawls on a shot in the center of the cage. A second effort from Smith once again puts Gonzalez on the ground at the fence. Gonzalez sits up against the fence and thumps Smith’s body with left hands, while Smith triangles the legs of the “Menifee Maniac” to hold him in place. Referee John McCarthy calls for work, and Smith obliges by socking Gonzalez in the face with a trio of punches in close quarters. McCarthy again tells the fighters to get busy as they hit the two-minute warning, and this time Smith responds by wrapping up Gonzalez in a headlock. Gonzalez slips his head free, powers back to his feet and hooks the leg of Smith for a quick takedown. Smith does the same a few seconds later, and Gonzalez finds himself back on bottom with 45 seconds on the clock. Smith tries to work his way up to full mount, but Gonzalez is seated high against the fence, leaving no room to mount. Referee McCarthy orders the fighters back to their feet with 10 seconds left, and that’s where the round ends.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Smith
Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Smith
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Smith

Round 3

Smith slips to the ground throwing a punch and gets slapped by a Gonzalez backfist on his way back up. Gonzalez steps in to tag Smith with a left hook, then backpedals as “Chocolate Thunder” rushes forward and dives for a takedown. Smith succeeds in planting Gonzalez on the ground yet again with more than four minutes left in the fight. He triangles Gonzalez’s legs, but this time Gonzalez is able to post, slip his legs free and burst back to his feet. Gonzalez flows into a takedown of his own, and now he’s got the Smith kneeling, allowing Gonzalez to land right hands from riding position. Smith powers back up and runs Gonzalez across the cage for yet another takedown.

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: D. Mandel/Sherdog.com

Gonzalez landed the damaging shots.
Smith is visibly tired in this round, and that may be what allows Gonzalez to once again post and stand from the bottom position. Gonzalez drags Smith back to the canvas, where the Californian roughs up Smith with short punches and elbows from side control. Smith briefly regains guard, then rolls to his knees and gets caught in the transition, eating a few more punches from Gonzalez along the way. Smith struggles back to his feet with 20 seconds left and tries to bomb on his opponent, but it’s Gonzalez with the cleaner, more accurate punches down the stretch.

Joe Warren vs. Darrion Caldwell

Round 1

New Jersey-based referee Dan Miragliotta is in charge of tonight’s 135-pound main event, which is scheduled for three rounds. Caldwell catches the first kick from Warren and converts it to an early takedown in the center of the cage. Warren is back on his feet within seconds, but Caldwell stays glued to his back with a bodylock. Caldwell throws a high knee and then drags Warren back to the floor, where he begins thumping the Greco-Roman wrestler with hard left hands. Warren is warned for the second time in the round as he continues to grab the inside of Caldwell’s gloves.

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: D. Mandel/Sherdog.com

Warren wasn't competitive for a second.
Caldwell is all over Warren here, keeping the former Bellator champ on his knees at the foot of the fence. Warren climbs back up but is on his feet for only a split second before Caldwell suplexes him onto his head. Back on his knees with two minutes remaining in the round, Warren tries to tuck his chin but winds up caught in a rear-naked choke. Caldwell flattens out Warren on his stomach and squeezes the choke until referee Miragliotta recognizes that Warren has gone unconscious. Darion Caldwell puts on a dominant performance and takes the win via first-round technical submission.
