Body Cam Footage Released from Alleged Jon Jones Crash Investigation

The Albuquerque Police Department has released partial body cam footage from the investigation of a crash site from which Jon Jones allegedly fled on foot earlier this year.

In the video obtained by the Albuquerque Journal, a Police Service Aide speaks to a woman claiming that Jones was the driver of a vehicle involved in a two-car collision in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Feb. 21. Seated in the passenger seat, she hands her phone to the PSA, who then speaks to a man she says is the former UFC champion. However, the man on the phone doesn’t identify himself on multiple occasions when asked.

Much of the conversation is unintelligible, but a criminal complaint states that the man believed to be Jones “also appeared to be heavily intoxicated and made statements implying his capacity to employ lethal force through third parties.”

“You won’t be the first guy this year that I’ve threatened … You’d be the second one,” the man can be heard saying.

“…My brothers, they kill people for way less. If something happens to me dude, she’s flat and dead,” he adds.

Eventually, the officer hands the phone back to the woman in the vehicle, who sounds frustrated when speaking to the man on the phone.

“I don’t know what the f—k you’re talking about,” she tells him. “My car is wrecked.”

Jones is facing a misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene of an accident, according to the complaint. He is due in Bernalillo (New Mexico) Count Metropolitan Court on July 24 for a bond arraignment. Jones’ lawyer, Christopher Dodd, released a statement on Monday claiming that the allegations are false and that the police were targeting his client for “improper purposes.”

Alleged Threats from Jones Led Albuquerque Police to Conduct Thorough Investigation

APD spokesman Gilbert Gallegos issued a statement to the Journal regarding the investigation.

“In addition to the multiple phone calls and text messages, the PSA believed he was threatened by Jones during the interaction,” Gallegos said. “So, yes, for everyone’s sake, APD officers took the incident seriously and conducted a more thorough investigation before making a decision to file charges.”

The news of the charge came to light after it was announced that Jones was retiring from MMA this past Saturday. UFC CEO Dana White said that a heavyweight title unification bout between Jones and interim champ Tom Aspinall had been targeted for the promotion’s annual card in New York in November before “Bones” had a change of heart and called it a career.

Jones has been hostile toward Albuquerque police in the past, notably in a 2016 incident where lapel footage shows the fighter calling an officer a “f—ing liar” and a “pig” after being pulled over for drag racing.

Jones appears to reference the current case in a recent post on his X account.

“Keep in mind, even the media can get it wrong sometimes if they don’t have all the facts,” he wrote. “Don’t believe everything you read online.”
