Teixeira KOs Eastman, Nova Uniao Shines at 'Fight for BOPE'

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Glover Teixeira proved himself as one of Brazil's best unsigned talents, as he moved his winning streak to 13 straight, knocking out UFC veteran Marvin Eastman in the first round in the main event of Shooto Brazil's "Fight for BOPE" on Thursday night.

Held at the Brazilian Special Police Battalion (BOPE) headquarters, the event was a celebration event of the recent work of the special police operations unit, as well as a perfect lead-in to UFC 134 at the HSBC Arena on Saturday night.

Teixeira accepted the striking game with Eastman and showed everything he has been learning with training partner Pedro Rizzo and the Delfim Boxing Academy. After stuffing two takedown attempts, Teixeira closed in on Eastman and landed a brutal straight on his chin. "The Beastman" hit the mat face-first and was down for the count at four minutes of the first round.

The 31-year-old Teixeira, now 15-2 in his career, continues to fight on small shows in Brazil while he waits for his green card status to be resolved in the U.S. Married to an American national, Teixeira could be waiting into the second half of 2012.

In the co-main event, UFC veteran Ronys Torres showed his determination to return to the big show, using his striking to get by tough Mexican lightweight Akbarh Arreola.

Torres showed a lot of improvement in his striking, stumbling his opponent twice with punches. However, Arreola's front kick and knees returned the favor to Torres, who took the fight to the ground, where he was in control.

Surprisingly, Arreola was twice close to catching the Nova Uniao product on the floor, with both a triangle and a kimura. However, Torres recomposed himself, worked his ground-and-pound and got the win via
unanimous decision. No scores were announced.

The win was the seventh straight for Torres since his release from the UFC and only the second to go the distance.

Making his featherweight debut, Hacran Dias moved his record to 19-1-1, showing world-class jiu-jitsu in submitting Team Alpha Male representative Eddie Hoch. Dias, the cousin of Marlon Sandro, took down Hoch and transitioned to the back, locking up a rear-naked choke at 3:25 of the first round.

The 27-year-old Rodolfo Marques Diniz, of Nova Uniao, took a dominant decision over Scott Jorgensen's training partner, Jesse Brock, with a solid performance. Marquez dominated position and threatened from the back over the 15-minute fight. Marques is next scheduled for action in Dream's bantamweight grand prix against Yusup Saadulaev on Sept. 24.

In a classic pairing of Brazilian welterweight veterans, the 42-year old Johil de Oliveira dominated Haroldo Bunn, now a BOPE member, who had not fought for six years. Oliveira opened a cut that prompted a doctor stoppage at 4:08 of the second round.

Other BOPE members were more successful.

With nearly a thousand crowd members chanting "Caveira!" -- Portuguese for "skull," the logo of BOPE -- two other BOPE officers outclassed their Argentinan opposition with great jiu-jitsu skills honed at Nova Uniao.

Soldier Cristiano Goncalves showed himself to be too much for Guilhermo Alejandro Teze, dominating from side control, mounting, taking the back and submitting Teze with a rear-naked choke at 2:28 of the first round, while Captain Felix Mau-Mau earned an arm-triangle choke over Juan Pablo Cordoba at 1:53 of the first round in front of a roaring crowd.

In the evening's opening bout, lightweight Felipe Oliveiri stopped Cesar Gordim on the doctor's advice at 1:35 of the second round.
